 Rogue Traders occupy one of the most unusual positions within the Imperium of Man, because they are simultaneously servants of the Emperor, explorers of unknown regions, merchants, diplomats, private military commanders, and individuals who possess an extraordinary degree of personal authority. While most Imperial citizens live under layers of bureaucracy and religious control, a Rogue Trader can cross borders that would be inaccessible to ordinary Imperial officials, negotiate with alien civilizations, establish trade routes, investigate unexplored worlds, and launch military expeditions using a warrant of trade that grants them powers far beyond those normally available to Imperial subjects.
